A firefighter's job is a demanding one. It requires the rapid completion of multiple physically demanding tasks, often with no time for rest between tasks. In the early 1990's the Combat Challenge was developed consisting of five sequentially performed fire ground evolutions that closely simulates the duties of a firefighter. The first Combat Challenge took place at the University of Maryland's MFRI (Maryland Fire Rescue Institute) in 1991.

The Fallen Firefighter Memorial Committee began hosting the annual TUFF (Tennessee Ultimate Fire Fighter) Challenge in 2005 as the primary fund raiser in support of the memorial.  Our goal was not only to raise funds but also to draw attention the Memorial. The first challenge saw 19 teams compete. In 2009 there were 32 teams and 46 individuals competing for the top honors with close to 1,000 spectators. 2010's TUFF Challenge is scheduled for September 25th so mark your calendars now!
